Introducing Tretorn X Nigel Cabourn

Evergreen forests, crystal clear lakes, and the vast Arctic mountains. this exclusive collaboration with the British designer legend traces the tracks to Sweden’s untouched wilderness.

For SS20, we present an exclusive collaboration with designer Nigel Cabourn. This joint effort is based on a shared passion for creating garments of highest quality; functional in detail, timeless in design and show respect to the natural environment. The collaboration is a three-piece collection containing a jacket, a bag and a pair of sneakers.

– With the Tretorn X Nigel Cabourn SAREK collaboration we engage the modern conscious consumer by combining our heritage with environmental consciousness, fuse it with the adventurous spirit of outdoor enthusiasts and make it ready for everyday life, says Fredrik Ekström Creative Director Tretorn.

The British legend Nigel Cabourn has worked in the industry for over forty years producing collections, which are not influenced by ‘fashion’ trends but driven by inspirational stories of real people in history and vintage military, outdoor and work wear pieces.

Tretorn introduced me to Sarek in northern Sweden, one of Europe's last true wilderness areas, which I found very exciting and inspirational. The result is that each item in this collaboration has a sense of the place that inspires it and is made with care and respect to this natural environment underpinned by Tretorn’s credentials through the Eco Essentials initiative, says Nigel Cabourn.

The Tretorn X Nigel Cabourn collection contains a 70’s inspired expedition jacket, complete with details from the Swedish mountain patrol and hiking community. The second piece of the collection is a large hiking style back pack made in the original 70’s style but up-dated with contemporary features and fit for modern urban use. Last but not least is the deconstructed sneaker from the Tretorn archive, which is a mix of Nylite and Racket, but reconstructed into a chunky retro hybrid with a 4-layer vulcanized sole. All products are made in organic Ventile.

Usually when I collaborate with brands, we’re either making clothes, shoes or accessories but with Tretorn we’re producing all three – which I’ve never done before. The magic of Tretorn is that this is possible, so we’ve created a three-piece combination of jacket, shoe and bag all made in organic Ventile so it’s pretty special, Cabourn says.

Nigel Cabourn’s vision is to make products that last forever. He also has a passion for vintage, which makes his work a role model for the sustainable fashion industry.

I’m really excited about this collaboration. I truly love working with the Swedes. Everything they do is for a reason. It’s practical, it works, and they don’t believe in putting a lot of crap into the society. They make things that last. And I think we’re very similar in the fact that we like to do things that are real. I don’t even consider myself a fashion designer, I simply like to do practical things that last forever. That’s my take on sustainable fashion, Nigel Cabourn says about the collaboration.

SAREK National Park is a 1970 km2 national park in the western part of Jokkmokk municipality in Lapland and was formed in 1909. The park is one of the oldest national parks in Europe and is Sweden's largest high mountain area where the indigenous Saami people have lived and followed the reindeer migration since ancient times. It’s considered the largest untouched wilderness in Europe and protected as a world heritage site by UNESCO since 1995. Since mid 1900 Tretorn have been making hiking boots for the area and in 1972 Tretorn was so connected to the region that the brand was granted to TradeMark SAREK.
